Investigating the PS seismic imaging of faults using seismic modelling and data from the Snøhvit field, Barents Sea

PS seismic data from the Snøhvit field are compared with modelling to understand effect of azimuthal separation and incidence angle on imaging faults associated horizon discontinuities. In addition, frequency content waves backscattered is analysed. The study area consists a horst structure delimited by northern fault dipping NW oblique E-W survey orientation, southern SSW subparallel survey. Due raypath asymmetry reflections, imaged better azimuthally partitioned W that include receivers downdip fault, relative sources, than E where updip sources. Partial stack show systematic increase in fault-reflected amplitude therefore quality increasing angle. Fault images dominated internal low-medium shadows surrounded medium-high frequencies haloes. Synthetic experiments suggest this due interaction specular diffractions, spectral contribution signal, which increases zone complexity.
